Lavera Sensitive Toothpaste is one of my favourite natural toothpastes. Lavera say that it offers protection from tooth decay, naturally whitens teeth, and gives clean, mint-fresh breath. The toothpaste uses sea salt to clean the teeth thoroughly, yet gently, without harming dentine.

There are several toothpastes in the Lavera Basis Sensitiv range – Classic, Organic Mint, and Kid’s varieties. This one is for those with sensitive teeth. As with other Lavera products, it’s Natrue certified.

This is not a sensitive toothpaste that offers active protection from sensitivity, like a conventional sensitive toothpaste. These toothpastes contain an active ingredient, potassium nitrite, to seal holes in the dentine. Lavera Basis Sensitiv Toothpaste simply isn’t as abrasive as other natural toothpastes.

Let’s have a look at the ingredients.

Lavera Basis Sensitiv Sensitive Toothpaste ingredients

Aqua, Sorbitol, Silica, Xylitol, Glycerin, Maris Sal, Betaine, CI 77891, Xanthan Gum, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate, Algin, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract, Foeniculum Vulgare Fruit Extract, Hamamelis Virginiana Flower Water, Myrtus Communis Leaf Water, Menthol, Sodium Fluoride, Aroma, Limonene, Eugenol.

How do the ingredients help?

Xylitol offers natural cavity protection while sweetening the toothpaste.

Sea salt stimulates the production of saliva, which flushes the mouth clean in the most natural way.

Chamomile soothes the gums.

Using Lavera Basis Sensitiv Sensitive Toothpaste

The toothpaste offers everything you’d expect. It contains no nasties, it foams well, tastes good, and supports healthy oral flora.

I was hoping this toothpaste would help me to ditch conventional toothpastes like Sensodyne Pronamel for good. Some ingredients in Pronamel make me really uncomfortable, especially artificial sweeteners like saccharin, and PEGs (polyethylene glycols).

Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen – my teeth are still sensitive using this toothpaste. I really need the active ingredient in conventional sensitive toothpastes. My workaround is to alternate using Pronamel with a natural toothpaste like this one.

Although it doesn’t work perfectly for me, it’s still a good choice if you want to avoid or reduce harsh abrasive toothpastes.

I’m waiting for a brand like Lavera to introduce a toothpaste with potassium nitrite, and without nasties!
