Five rose floral waters to hydrate and harmonise

Five rose floral waters to keep you cool this summer

How have you stayed cool through this massive heatwave we’ve just had? I love to use rose floral water to stay cool and feel refreshed. A quick spritz goes a long way! But did you know that rose floral waters have a host of other skincare benefits that are quite simply amazing?

As my love of using rose water has grown, so has my curiosity about all things rose water!

So in this post I’d love to share what I’ve learned about the benefits of rose floral waters, how to choose a good quality rose water, and what different uses there are for rose floral water.

I’d also love to share my favourite 5 pure rose floral waters you can buy.

I hope you enjoy this post focused on rose floral waters!

The skincare benefits of rose floral waters

Rose water is an amazing addition to your skincare routine no matter what your skin type or age. Rose water has a multitude of benefits and a long and well deserved history in skincare.

Skin and hair

Pure rose floral waters are cleansing and detoxifying, helping to balance the pH of skin and hair. With anti-inflammatory properties, rose water helps to calm and soothe. It contains plentiful antioxidants and its use helps strengthen skin cells and regenerate skin tissues.

Rose water hydrates, nourishes, and is moisturising. It’s reported to be anti-ageing. It helps treat skin conditions such as acne and rosacea.

Quite amazing, isn’t it?

Therapeutic

For me, the fragrance of rose is so therapeutic. It just takes me some place else – a moment of bliss!

Rose floral water improves mood, rejuvenates, and harmonises. It’s reputed to help dispel feelings of anger and improve feelings of self love.

And, of course, it’s very romantic!

What should I look for when choosing rose floral water?

To choose a true rose water, look for rose water made via distillation. There should only be one ingredient – rose distillate. A rose hydrosol or hydrolat is also a distilled rose water.

Cheaper rose waters may mix rose oil with water, which is not a true distillate.

Rosa Centifolia

The label should reveal whether or not your rose water is a real distillate. If in doubt, ask the brand. A reliable brand will be able to verify the production process used. Most will be shouting about it on the label!

There are many varieties of rose, but two you will commonly see on rose waters are Rosa Damascena and Rosa Centifolia.

Roses used for rose water are grown in several different places in the world. One of the most renowned is Rose Valley in Bulgaria. But Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, India, France, and even Australia grow roses for rose water.

The varied uses for rose floral waters

There are so many ways to use rose floral waters!

  • A quick spritz as a pick-me-up or tonic.
  • As a toner instead of traditional toners.
  • Mix with other products to lighten their texture.
  • Set makeup after applying.
  • Use before applying moisturisers and balms to speed their absorption.
  • Apply to sunburn.
  • Pillow spray to soothe and ease off to sleep.
  • Homemade skincare products.
  • Use food grade rose water to flavour food and drink.
  • To fragrance the home.

Pure rose floral water is an unpreserved and delicate product. That’s why when storing rose floral water, you should always make sure it’s stored away from direct sunlight and kept cool. It’s quite nice to store it in the fridge during the summer months.

Next, let’s look at some lovely rose waters you can buy.

The rose floral waters

Here are my top rose water picks. All prices stated are per 100ml of rose water.

Alteya Organics Bulgarian Rose Water

I love Alteya Organics products – they’re all so clean and, well, beautiful. If anybody knows about rose products, it’s Alteya Organics!

Alteya Organics Bulgarian Rose Water

Alteya Organics Rose Water is USDA certified organic, 100% steam distilled, and bottled in Rose Valley in Bulgaria. It’s therapeutic and food grade.

The fragrance of this rose water is pure, delicate, and completely true to the Rosa Damascena plant it was extracted from. Alteya Organics use a unique distillation technique that combines old traditions with the latest extraction technology. This preserves the bio-dynamic energy of the rose plant.

I received my Alteya Organics Rose Water in the May LoveLula Beauty Box – it came in a clear plastic bottle. However, you can also buy it in a glass bottle – choice is good!

  • Fragrance: excellent
  • Packaging: plastic and no colouring to protect it from sunlight
  • Rose type: Rosa Damascena
  • Price: excellent value for money

Balm Balm Rose Floral Water Hydrosol

This was the first rose water I ever used, so I have a big soft spot for it. Balm Balm is a fantastic brand offering 100% organic skincare essentials.

Laboratoire du Haut-Segala Rose Water

This brand is completely new to me, but I wanted to try their rose water since it’s very good value for money. I love to try new brands! Laboratoire du Haut-Segala offer Ecocert certified natural products that harness the special properties of plants.

Laboratoire du Haut-Segala Rose Water

The fragrance is wonderful. I like the blue bottle, but it is plastic. The design of the label seems a little outdated, but that doesn’t matter since the product is high quality.

  • Fragrance: excellent
  • Packaging: plastic, but the bottle is coloured to protect from sun exposure
  • Rose type: Rosa Damascena
  • Price: on the cheaper side

Laila London Rose Water Mist

This is the least favourite of my rose waters. The smell is not for the faint-hearted! I often wonder if I got a funny bottle, since it has a rather mature fragrance!

Laila London Rose Water Mist

I’ve been using this one on my body, not my face. I also use it to fragrance my home. I love the glass bottle, though.

  • Fragrance: takes some getting used to
  • Packaging: plastic, clear
  • Rose type: Rosa Centifolia
  • Price: average

Zenon Kition Floral Beauty Mist

Last but certainly not least is Zenon Kition Floral Beauty Mist. Zenon Kition is a relatively new brand with some seriously lovely natural products.

Zenon Kition Floral Beauty Mist

Their rose water is distilled from rose petals in Rose Valley in Bulgaria. As you would expect, it’s very high quality and smells beautiful. I would prefer it in a glass bottle, or at least in a coloured bottle. I love the design of the packaging and just seeing it on my beauty shelf cheers me up!

  • Fragrance: excellent
  • Packaging: plastic, uncoloured
  • Rose type: Rosa Damascena
  • Price: average
