Pregnancy natural beauty tips

Pregnancy natural beauty tips

Looking for the most natural beauty and skincare while you’re expecting? While there’s no evidence that everyday beauty and skincare products cause harm to unborn babies, many women choose to avoid certain ingredients during pregnancy. When we hear about some ingredients having detrimental effects, why wouldn’t we want to avoid them?

Disclosure: this post contains references to PR gifted products and products I’ve chosen with my credits as a LoveLula Accredited Blogger. My views are honest and my own.

Pregnancy is a life changing time – you want to feel beautiful without worrying, and your beauty and skincare products should support that.

Feel beautiful and make the cleanest possible choices with my pregnancy natural beauty tips.

A note about safety – please talk to your midwife before using natural products in pregnancy. Some ladies choose to avoid products containing essential oils in the first trimester.

Care for your skin

Stretch marks are completely unavoidable, but there’s plenty you can do to minimise their appearance, keep your skin supple, and soothe the itching associated with stretching skin.

Kit & Kin Stretch Mark Oil

I use pampering Weleda Stretch Mark Massage Oil, and Kit & Kin Stretch Mark Massage Oil, which comes in a spray bottle and is perfect for quick application.

Don’t have time for oil? Try a spritz of Seven Minerals Aloe Vera Spray to instantly hydrate and soothe itchy skin.

For your face, try this organic cleansing oil by Cocokind that easily removes dirt and excess oil. It also gives that feeling of having soft and clean skin, thanks to its gentle and safe formulation.

Choose natural sunscreens

Your skin is prone to hyper-pigmentation during pregnancy. Choose natural sunscreens containing physical blocks such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

For your body, Green People sunscreens are some of the best.

For your face in summer, choose the lovely PAI British Summer Time Zinc & Cotton Extract SPF30 Sensitive Sunscreen. In winter, try Antipodes Immortal Face & Body Moisturiser SPF15.

Use a natural deodorant

Is there any evidence that aluminium in anti-perspirant causes cancer? No. But natural deodorant respects the skin’s need to sweat, which is especially important during pregnancy. Choose one with all natural ingredients for maximum peace of mind.

Elsa's Deodorant in Ocean

My absolute favourite is Elsa’s Organics, which comes in a stick or cream, and a range of fragrances. I find this deodorant more effective than conventional deodorants – it really is amazing.

Treat pregnancy acne naturally

Has your pregnancy caused acne? Don’t use topical retinoid products to treat it. While they’ve not been shown to cause problems, doctors advise you avoid them just to be safe. Ingredients to look out for include retinoic acid, retinol, retinyl linoleate, and retinyl palmitate.

Instead, stick to a simple pregnancy skincare routine that focuses on cleansing, toning, and moisturising.

Use clean haircare products

Clean up your haircare routine by choosing shampoo, conditioner, and treatments without sulphates, silicones, parabens, synthetic fragrance, or PEGs. My favourite ranges are Tabitha James Kraan, and Green People.

Opt for safe hair colourants

There’s no solid research that says you can’t colour your hair when pregnant. But if, like me, you want to be extra cautious, there are some options. You can wait until after 12 weeks to minimise the risks to your developing baby. Or you can try colouring techniques like balayage, which don’t touch your scalp.

Some natural hair colouring options include henna-based colourants like Ayumi, which are safe to use during pregnancy although it’s recommended you check with your midwife just to be sure.

Switch to natural nail care

Nail polish can be chock-full of less than desirable ingredients. For complete peace of mind, switch to natural nail polish.

Kure Bazaar Nail Polish in Dolce

Two of the cleanest ranges are Kure Bazaar (read my Kure Bazaar manicure routine) and NATorigin which are 10-free and contain no toluene, formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, synthetic camphor, TPHP, parabens, xylene, styrene, nano colours, or benzophenone-1-3.

Avoid harsh dental care

Gums are extra sensitive during pregnancy, so choose a toothpaste without harsh foaming ingredients like SLS. I love Copura Coconut and Aloe Toothpaste, and Lavera Basis Sensitiv Toothpaste for sensitive teeth – both take really good care of teeth and gums.

Switch to natural perfume

Switch to natural fragrances, but watch that they don’t contain essential oils that aren’t recommended during pregnancy. Read my thoughts on natural perfumes during pregnancy, some of which you can use during pregnancy.

Look after your legs and feet

Here are my favourite natural products to help with leg problems and foot swelling, and to help keep your legs and feet beautiful.

Herbfarmacy Horse Chestnut Balm

For vein health, try The Organic Pharmacy Bilberry Complex Cream, which contains horse chestnut to support capillary and vein health. To soothe heavy, tired legs use Herbfarmacy Horse Chestnut Balm.

For leg and foot circulation, try tamanu oil, which may also strengthen blood vessels. To relieve heat and swelling, a few sprays of lemon balm water works really well.
