Hello, dear beauty lover! It’s great to see you here! The waiting is finally over! I’m so delighted to announce the finalists in the CertClean Clean Beauty Awards 2020!

Back in October, I posted about my excitement after I was selected to judge in the CertClean Clean Beauty Awards. Thanks for nominating me, lovely Renata at Green Life in Dublin.

I’m so happy to be part of these 5th annual awards that recognise truly green brands!

The Clean Beauty Awards were created to celebrate the cleanest beauty products available globally. These awards aim to promote the growth of the clean beauty movement to help us all be safer and healthier, avoiding controversial and potentially harmful ingredients.

The awards are hosted by CertClean in partnership with PurPicks.

I was selected to judge lip care. So without further ado, here are the finalists in the lip care category.

The top lip care

  • Dr. Lipp – Original Nipple Balm
  • Jaboneria Marianella – The Royal Kalahari Under Eye and Lip Serum Roller Oil
  • Elevé Cosmetics – Lip LUV Lip Treatment
  • #LipGlam – the multi-award winning beauty balm
  • Lowen’s – Creamsicle Lip Balm
  • Pevonia – Rapid-Restore Lip Balm
  • Dianne Caine Australia – Lip Restore
  • Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm – Nomad Lip Balm

How would you like to meet the finalists and learn my judging process? Like, how on earth did I choose my favourite amongst all these lovely lip care products?

Let’s dive in and have a look!

How I judged the lip care category

Firstly, I looked at how much time I had to judge the products, then divided my time equally between them all. I had to allow more time for one product, since its claims gave a 29 day period to see results.

Once testing a product, I looked at the following metrics.

  • Performance i.e. does the product do what it says it would do?
  • Ease of use i.e. application process, clear instructions, etc.
  • User experience i.e. odour, smell, texture, residue, absorption rate, etc.
  • Recommendation i.e. would I recommend this product to others?

During judging I was also mindful of price and ingredients i.e. is it good value for money given the ingredients? Are the ingredients special?

Then, once testing a product, I would only use that product and I would use it under various scenarios. For instance some of the lip care products claimed to keep lips moisturised for 8 hours. So I would go 8 hours between applications to see how the products fared.

So now we’ve learned about the process, it’s time to take a look at the wonderful finalists!

The CertClean Clean Beauty Awards finalists

Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm

Have you seen this cult status multipurpose balm before? It’s one heavy duty lip balm that stays put and keeps moisture in!

Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm

This lanolin based balm claims to be long-lasting and instantly moisturising. I do find it quite hard to apply unless it’s kept in a warm pocket. But the results are amazing, and long lasting too. And I love how it can be used on any part of my body.

It’s always a pleasure to use a tube of this skin saviour!

Jaboneria Marianella The Royal Kalahari Under Eye and Lip Serum

This is a seriously luxurious product with a feel good factor! I love the cooling metal rollerball and the interesting melon seed oil. This oil-based serum is the most expensive of all the lip care products at £27.

Marianella Under Eye and Lip Serum

The formula claims to soothe lips, while the steel rollerball applicator helps reduce inflammation and improve circulation. It would be so refreshing during the warmer months or in hot countries.

The oil is light and sinks in quickly with a mild nutty aroma and a silky feel.

It really helped me to feel special while softening my skin and is the perfect pampering pick me up. Highly recommended!

Elevé Cosmetics Lip LUV Lip Treatment

When I opened my package from CertClean, this product caught my attention first! It was love at first sight. From the soft pink colour, to the sleek minimalist tube.

The easy-to-use foam tip applicator packaging suggests a conventional lip gloss, however this is just as much a treatment as it is a conventional lip balm.

A look at the Elevé website reveals a host of lip care claims, so let’s take a look at those first.

Lip LUV promises to plump and moisturise lips to hydrate, smooth, and instantly heal. Regular use (3 times a day for 29 days) will improve the contour of the lips, reduce the signs of ageing, and volumise lips up to 40%. It contains 2 natural peptides – Maxi-lip™ and Dermaxyl™.

This is one of the most expensive lip care products, priced at £21 for 8g. It has a cooling mint flavour and feels thick and luxurious on the lips, with a slight tingle on application.

It moisturises well, but my lips still feel a little thirsty between the 3 applications. Does it live up to claims? I used it as directed and I definitely saw plumper lips with a more clearly defined cupid’s bow.

Would I recommend? Definitely yes! This is my favourite product amongst the 10 I tried, for its results and ease of use.

#LipGlam Beauty Balm

This softening balm claims to last for 8 hours and works well under makeup. It promises to be readily absorbed and give instant relief from chapped lips. The balm aims to give an instant plumping effect. An interesting stat is that the balm is proven to reduce skin roughness by 40%.

It contains just 2 ingredients – lanolin and argan oil, a really nice combination. My skin loves its softening and protective formula and it’s definitely one I’d recommend, especially if you like Dr. Lipp or any other lanolin based balm. Just like Dr. Lipp, it’s a great on-the-go balm for all kinds of dry skin malady.

Lowen’s Creamsicle Lip Balm

I really enjoy using this softly melting orange and vanilla lip balm from Lowen’s, a family-run Canadian natural beauty brand. With vegetable hyaluronic acid and shea butter, this balm hydrates and moisturises parched lips.

It has quite a waxy feel and feels like it’s working really well to protect lips. My lips were soft and comforted by the balm, which was originally formulated as a nappy rash balm!

This is a nice lip balm to keep in your coat pocket. And check out all the other scrummy flavours too!

Pevonia Rapid-Restore Lip Balm

Pevonia Lip Balm claims to go way beyond the average lip product. It’s “an exceptional emollient blend clinically proven to visibly repair, smooth, and plump while instantly hydrating lips and the lip contour”.

Pevonia Rapid-Restore Lip Balm

There are several other claims which I found to be true, including reducing wrinkling on the lips, and softening rough patches while smoothing and moisturising.

This balm includes antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E along with shea butter and vegetable olus oil from olives.

The deliciously rose-scented lip balm glides on easily leaving my lips soft and well moisturised. I did see a softening of my wrinkles, which made me happy!

A lovely lip balm with a cheerful disposition and carefully chosen ingredients!

Dianne Caine Australia Lip Restore

I really love this one. It gives long lasting care, plus it’s flavour and scent-free. Lip Restore claims to be a replenishing formula to soothe, repair and protect. The balm restores moisture and softens the lips.

Dianne Caine Lip Restore

It has a deliciously thick and silky texture with a sweet flavour. The balm is beeswax-based, which may be nice for those who shy away from sheep-based lanolin products. I feel it has the same excellent effectiveness as lanolin lip care products.

I use it on my children, too, and they really appreciate it! A lovely family lip balm to share.

Okanagen Lavender & Herb Farm Nomad Lip Balm

A beautifully coloured and delicately fragranced balm with a healing and nourishing formula. Nomad promises to leave lips feeling soft and supple with local beeswax, avocado oil, and infused rose hips.

Okanagen Lavender & Herb Farm Lip Balm: Nomad

This lip balm comes in an cardboard tube, so there is absolutely no plastic here! Just remove the label to recycle or compost.

I do find this one hard to apply in cooler conditions, but once softened it does a wonderful job of moisturising the lips and protecting them from the elements.

This is a great choice if you’re looking for a natural lip balm that will help reduce your plastic waste.

  1. Could you please let us know which of these, if any, are vegan?

    • As far as I know, only Elevé Cosmetics – Lip LUV is vegan. Many contain beeswax and lanolin. Jaboneria Marianella The Royal Kalahari Under Eye and Lip Serum contains raw honey.
