Welcome back, my beauty friend! Let me tell you all about the natural beauty brand that’s transformed my lockdown hair and skin. Have you heard of John Masters Organics before? The brand creates salon-worthy, effective haircare and skincare products using only organic and natural ingredients.

When you look and feel your very best, your beauty speaks for itself.

As a leading stylist in New York in the 90s, John Masters was part of an early clean beauty revolution. Because, as his success as a stylist increased, so too did his awareness that the harsh chemicals used in the salon industry may be causing himself, his clients, and the wider world harm.

John Masters knew that nature is the best source for clean beauty, so in 1991 he founded his range of haircare products for a gentler and cleaner way to care for hair.

In 2019, the brand launched a range of beautiful skincare products with a spa-like feel to address specific skincare concerns.

And today, John Masters Organics is a real success story. His haircare and skincare products can be found in over 40 countries worldwide.

You may recognise the sleek monochrome packaging that wouldn’t look out of place in the salon.

Haircare and skincare from John Masters Organics range

I love that the gender-free packaging and product formulating means that women and men alike will enjoy and feel connected to these products – especially the new skincare range.

And if you’re worried about controversial ingredients and practises, then take a look at JMO’s ingredient promise.

Some of my favourite parts of JMOs ethos include using only steam distilled or cold pressed extraction processes over chemical processes – which can destroy the benefit of the oils. And I appreciate that all ingredients should be proven to be beneficial to the skin or hair – there is no unproven ingredient included in any formulation.

I first tried John Masters Organics in 2017 in my role as a LoveLula Accredited Blogger. Last month, I was so kindly gifted haircare and skincare by the brand, and now I can’t wait to share my brand review with you!

About my hair

It’s been a while since I posted about haircare, so it’s probably a good idea to share my hair situation with you. This way you can see if my situation applies to your hair, and therefore if John Masters Organics haircare would be a good fit for you!

My hair is bleached and long. I haven’t been to the hairdresser since July, so I’m starting to get quite badly damaged ends. My hair gets dry very quickly. I mostly wash it every other day. Sometimes I use the hairdryer, but not every time I wash. I rarely use heated styling tools. I’m not very happy with it at the moment because it gets frizzy on the top and the ends, I have greys poking through that won’t lay flat and I need a haircut to even up the ends since I changed my parting to cover an area of thinning.

John Masters haircare products have made a significant difference to how my hair looks and feels! I’m actually pretty happy with my hair again. Even after the first wash I could tell the difference.

Would you like to hear what products I tried and why I love them so much?

John Masters Organics Haircare

Shampoo for Dry Hair with Evening Primrose

Because of my hair type – dry and coloured, I chose a shampoo for dry hair. John Masters Organics also has shampoo and conditioner for normal, fine, and damaged hair. They describe this sulphate-free shampoo as ultra-hydrating – perfect for my parched locks.

John Masters Organics Shampoo for Dry Hair with Evening Primrose

But how does it work? Firstly, it cleanses dry hair without any stripping or weighing hair down. Second, it helps to increase the hair’s moisture levels. Lastly, it soothes strands from roots to tips for restored shine and lustre.

Notable ingredients in the Shampoo for Dry Hair with Evening Primrose include nourishing evening primrose oil, moisturising jojoba oil, and strengthening avocado oil.

This beautifully fragranced shampoo is dark in colour and quite thin. It works into a gorgeous lather. Sometimes I repeat the wash, it depends how dirty my hair is. It’s easy to rinse away ready for conditioner.

Although my hair hair feels scrupulously clean after using this shampoo, it doesn’t feel overly dry. My hair has that baby soft feel again thanks the shampoo and conditioner together. I’ll explain my results from both of them used together in the conditioner review, coming up next.

Conditioner for Dry Hair with Lavender & Avocado

I love that John Masters Organics products are silicone free. I generally avoid silicones in hair products due to their detrimental effect on the environment. This hydrating conditioner is formulated for dry hair on the same principles as the shampoo.

John Masters Organics Conditioner for Dry Hair with Lavender & Avocado

John Masters Organics Conditioner for Dry Hair with Lavender & Avocado aims to intensely condition and hydrate dry, brittle hair without adding extra weight. It also increases the hair’s ability retain moisture. Then, it aims to soothe hair strands with the end result of shiny and soft hair.

Like the shampoo, the conditioner also contains jojoba and avocado oils, plus lavender oil to soothe and nourish the hair.

This is a soft, white and creamy conditioner that has the beautiful fragrance of soothing lavender. I absolutely love it! This is the kind of conditioner you can feel working from the minute it’s on. Immediately my hair feels softer and I can comb tangles through with my fingers.

Together, the shampoo and conditioner are making a real difference to my hair. My hair feels softer and swishier, and I want to touch it more often. I’m sure the colour is also looking better, like the hydration has improved all aspects of my hair. The ends are far less dry – the shampoo and conditioner are like a regular treatment and reduce the need for me to use separate masks and oils.

If you have dry, chemically coloured hair, this shampoo and conditioner combo is definitely the one for you. It really has transformed how my hair looks and feels. And I’ve been so down about it because of lockdown. Thank you, John Masters!

Scalp Stimulating Shampoo with Spearmint & Meadowsweet

I first tried this shampoo as a sample, but I’m so happy to now have the full sized bottle. This is a great shampoo when your scalp is feeling oily. John Masters explains that the spearmint leaf oil and meadowsweet flower extract will help to detox the scalp and regulate its sebum production. It also contains eucalyptus oil which improves the general health of the scalp.

John Masters Organics Scalp Stimulating Shampoo with Spearmint & Meadowsweet

Scalp Stimulating Shampoo with Spearmint & Meadowsweet is dark in colour and almost like a gel consistency yet easy to apply. I find the addition of peppermint, spearmint, and eucalyptus so refreshing and invigorating.

I’ve reached for this shampoo several times and it does a great job of calming the psoriasis on my scalp – reducing the itching and cooling my scalp. If you have a dry skin condition on your scalp, patch test first – but it may be worth a try.

I love how I can mix and match with my shampoo and conditioner for dry hair, and this shampoo doesn’t strip any moisture away.

If you have dandruff, an oily scalp, or psoriasis, this could be the shampoo for you. And you can pair it with any of John Masters Organics conditioners to suit your hair needs.

Hair Milk with Rose & Apricot

This is a really beautiful leave-in conditioner and styling cream that’s suitable for dry hair types. You can use it after conditioning for some major hydration, or you can skip conditioner and just use this! Naturally, it’s silicone free like all John Masters Organics haircare.

John Masters Organics Hair Milk with Rose & Apricot

John Masters Organics Hair Milk with Rose & Apricot contains rose water and apricot kernel oil to provide just the right level of hydration – protecting and softening locks for a shiny and more manageable result.

Opening the flip cap, I can dispense just the right amount of conditioner. It smells like beautiful rose geranium. I use this leave in conditioner after washing with shampoo and conditioner when I need extra hydration. The conditioner really boosts my hair’s moisture levels without leaving it greasy. I use it to tame flyaways and soften the ends after blow drying. I also use it between washes to tame the ends.

My daughter’s hair gets very tangled and the conditioner does an amazing job after her bath at making it comb-able! It also brings out her curls beautifully.

This is a perfect mummy and daughter product and a real win for our haircare collection!

Nourishing Defrizzer for Dry Hair

John Masters Organics Nourishing Defrizzer for Dry Hair is an oil-based leave-in defrizzing treatment for dry and damaged hair. It also works wonders on split ends!

John Masters Organics Nourishing Defrizzer for Dry Hair

It contains nine certified organic essential oils specifically chosen for their ability to restore, moisturise, and protect dry hair.

I really love the dark glass bottle with its sleek dropper – it’s like a serum for hair. Applying 1 to 3 drops to my palm, I can feel the light oily texture and take in the herbal fragrance reminiscent of rosemary and cedarwood.

Texture and colour of John Masters Organics Nourishing Defrizzer for Dry Hair

I was a bit worried this product would leave my hair greasy, but not at all. It leaves my hair smooth, sleek, and as shiny as it can be given its condition.

I really love how it both improves the look of my hair, plus treats it with gorgeous hair-loving oils like avocado and coconut, to prevent further damage.

Definitely one to try to both treat frizziness and deal with split ends – until you can make it to the hairdresser (roll on April).

John Masters Organics Skincare

Cleansing Balm with Kokum Butter and Sea Buckthorn

John Masters branched out into skincare in 2019, and I am nothing short of seriously impressed with the two products I’ve tried. The first of which this beautiful emulsifying cleansing balm. It promises to remove waterproof makeup and impurities without stripping essential moisture from the skin. It’s great for all skin types but especially dry skin.

John Masters Organics Cleansing Balm with Kokum Butter and Sea Buckthorn

With a colour as stunning as this, you know it’s going to be rich in antioxidants. And this is actually part of the product claims – antioxidant-rich to help fight premature ageing. I love that it contains vitamin C rich sea buckthorn.

I take a small scoop from the plastic jar and gently massage between my palms to soften and melt the balm into an oil. I’m met by the amazing fragrance, which I’m having a hard time placing.

John Masters Organics Cleansing Balm with Kokum Butter and Sea Buckthorn transforms into a milk on contact with water. I use a cleansing cloth to easily whisk away the cleanser, along with a day’s worth of grime, makeup, and SPF. It works so well to shift makeup, I am impressed!

After cleansing, there’s no residue, but of course double cleansing is usually necessary so I use a second cleanser to remove every trace of what’s left.

My skin, is comfortable, prepped, and ready for the next step of my PM routine.

This is easily one of my newest favourite cleansers, it’s a truly wonderful experience to use. And I’m sure it’s also a great long term investment in my skin’s health.

Intensive Daily Serum with Vitamin C & Kakadu Plum

Last but not least, and actually my favourite John Masters Organics product. This is a potent anti-ageing vitamin C serum made with kakadu plum, the world’s richest source of vitamin C. It promises to brighten, reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, and even the skin tone. I’d never heard of kakadu plum before!

John Masters Organics Intensive Daily Serum with Vitamin C & Kakadu Plum

The Intensive Daily Serum also contains ferulic acid which makes a great pairing with vitamin C. And there’s aspen bark to gently exfoliate for smoother, clearer skin. Superoxide dismutase is another ingredient in the formula that works hard to keep your skin youthful by fending off free radicals. This serum packs a real ingredient punch!

I really love the dark glass bottle with its pump mechanism. It delivers just the right amount of the lightweight serum into my palm. Smoothing it over my skin, I can smell its beautiful smokey aroma.

Texture and colour of Intensive Daily Serum with Vitamin C & Kakadu Plum

The serum sinks in quickly and leaves my skin ready for my next step, usually moisturiser. My skin is soft and peachy. Recommended use of the serum is twice a day, but I only use it once. I’ll work up to twice a day if my skin feels okay with it.

And the results? Although I’m already using a vitamin C product daily, after a week or so of use I’m noticing an increased glow and no irritation at all. I feel like this serum is such a good investment in my skin and the experience of using it is wonderful. It’s a lot like Lilfox Haute C, which costs double and has a similar ingredient profile and fragrance.

Can’t recommend it highly enough, definitely one to try if you want to protect your skin from the signs of ageing.
