Welcome back, my lovely! Today I’m delighted to share a cream that’s improving and soothing Lydia’s eczema. It’s the fabulous Zoe Bee Charcoal & Oat Moisturiser!

Does your baby suffer with eczema? This condition is estimated to affect up to 20% of infants worldwide. I know I’m not alone in finding my baby’s eczema really distressing.

Lydia’s eczema

It started when Lydia was about 8 weeks old. When red patches first appeared on her face and thighs, I wasn’t worried. My other children had something similar at her age and it cleared on its own.

Lydia's eczema

However, Lydia’s eczema didn’t go away. It got worse, and nothing I did helped. In hindsight, my other children probably had cradle cap, not eczema. We live and learn!

It was so sad to see her scratch herself in her sleep, and the itch-scratch cycle left her skin so much worse.

Always keeping her nails short, we invested in some special scratch mitts. We applied all kinds of emollients on the advice of our doctor. We even tried mainstream products like Aveeno. Nothing really made Lydia’s eczema any better.

Discovering Zoe Bee

I first discovered Zoe Bee through the fabulous recommendations on the Caroline Hirons Skincare Freaks Facebook group.

Helping the world rediscover the love story between themselves and their skin.

Several freaks recommended the Charcoal & Oat Cream to treat eczema flare ups, and since I was pretty desperate to help heal Lydia’s skin, I knew I had to try it. Spoilers: it actually works wonders!

Now, at 6 months old, Lydia’s eczema has improved quite a lot. She still flares, however, and her some of her flares occur when dairy products touch her skin. We still don’t fully understand what’s at the root of her eczema, but we intend to do more research and involve our health visitor and/or doctor.

Whether the improvements we’ve seen are due to the cream, or due to the warmer weather – we’re not sure. But I’d love to share with you the details of this Charcoal & Oat Moisturiser. It really helps us! I’ll explain how her skin has improved further down the post.

Now we know the background, let’s deep dive into this awesome cream!

Zoe Bee Charcoal & Oat Moisturiser

This waterless cream has the texture of a gorgeous whipped butter. The clever formula is designed to help with all kinds of problems for adults and babies alike. It contains soothing oat, detoxifying charcoal, and healing dragon’s blood along with zinc oxide, a popular ingredient in baby creams.

According to the product claims, the cream is a potent emollient, which is just what I want to sit on top of Lydia’s skin and protect it from the outside world. It claims to be rich in proteins, lipids, and phenols to keep skin healthy. Anti-inflammatory vitamin E is also included in the product description, but isn’t on the ingredients/INCI list.

As with all Zoe Bee products, it is vegan, natural, and cruelty free. In fact Zoe Bee promises to only use high quality, unrefined, organic ingredients that support local communities.

The ingredients of this cream reads like a dream come true for eczema sufferers.

Zoe Bee Charcoal & Oat Moisturiser ingredients

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter), Zinc Oxide, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Oil, Charcoal Powder, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Fruit Extract, Ribes Nigrum (Blackcurrant) Seed Oil, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Avena Sativa (Oat) Bark Extract, Nigella Sativa (Black Cumin) Seed Oil Extract, Croton Lechleri (Dragon’s Blood) Resin, Aquilaria Crassna (Agarwood) Stem Extract.

Some claims from the brand:

  • Oats help the skin through restoring the skin barrier, reducing itching, and regulating inflammation.
  • Activated charcoal draws impurities from the skin for a flawless complexion.

And some notes from me:

  • Zinc oxide creates a barrier against moisture and protects against sun and wind damage.
  • Dragon’s blood contains the alkaloid taspine, which encourages wound healing. It also contains proanthocyanidins, which reinforce and defend collagen fibres for improved skin firmness and elasticity. Source.
  • Aquilaria Crassna, aka agarwood. From what I can tell it is anti-inflammatory. I am surprised that I can’t really detect the woody scent of this in the product.

All Zoe Bee products are packaged in glass, so you’re getting a plastic free experience. And what a beautiful experience it is, with the heavy glass jar and gorgeous wooden screw cap.

Who can resist a whipped moisturiser in a jar? It is just so beautiful! Light and airy – it has a delicate fragrance with the light scent of orange and the natural aroma of shea butter.

Using the cream

Taking a small amount from the jar, it’s easy to apply to the skin. I like to apply this to my daughter’s skin right after cleansing it with water only.

The finish isn’t too heavy, but it’s definitely a rich emollient – perfect. She doesn’t look shiny afterwards though, and her face isn’t sticky.

My daughter’s skin isn’t cured, but it’s definitely happier. It’s less inflamed, more supple, and more resilient to going out in the wind or cold.

It feels softer to the touch and looks calmer, too. We manage her flare ups by applying the cream twice a day.
