To my dear Cara, Happy 7th birthday, my sweetheart. You are growing up to be such a funny, fierce, mysterious, and fabulous eldest daughter! In this letter, I’m going to talk about your life over the past year and the gorgeous personality we see emerging as you get older. I love you because you get excited about the weather with me. I love how capable you are. You’re pretty much the only person in my house who is capable of making me a ham and mustard sandwich. But no matter what you achieve, I’ll always love you and be proud of you, just for being Cara. In my letter, I’ll also include some of the little things about you. It’s the things we forget while life gets busy—the details lost amongst the demands of toddlers, laundry, cooking, and shopping. Things like you losing an absolute ton of teeth this year.…

Darling Lydia, How time is flying now that you are four years old. It doesn’t seem like five minutes ago that you were a small baby. Let me start this letter by telling you how much I love you, and letting you know how very proud I am of you. Love and joy come naturally to you. You’ve touched so many hearts since you were born. You’ve changed me for the better. Lydia, you bring fun and happiness into our lives, and I’m so grateful for that. Your sweet and dreamy personality is so charming and sometimes I feel like you have adults under your spell! You always want to chat, and we can hold real conversations just for fun now. You are highly engaging, and highly engaged with the people that you meet, and the things that you do. You’re so special, you even help introverted me to make…

Eleanor, it’s your second birthday! How is my youngest cherub and the baby of the house 2 years old already? Who is Eleanor at 2 years old? You are sunny, vibrant, happy, vocal, helpful, and a pleasure to be with. You are exceptionally loving. When you wrap your little arms around my neck, my heart melts for you. I could breathe you in. You are without a doubt the most polite toddler I’ve ever met. Since you started to talk, you’ve always said “please” and “thank you”. Your two eldest siblings are the complete opposite and still don’t say please and thank you without prompting at 9 and 6! We’re still breastfeeding. Still co-sleeping. With my first baby, the reasoning and timing of all my parenting choices seemed to matter, but now all that matters is loving you while you are still small and need me. As a mum to…

To my dear Jonah, I almost didn’t write this letter. Life has been so busy recently. I couldn’t think of anything to write about.  After all, the baby and toddler years move so fast, but when kids get older, things often move in less visible ways. You’re my eldest, so I experience parenthood first hand with you. You’re my only boy and autistic, so I often wonder what is normal and what is not. But, this is a funny age where you feel so grown up to me, and yet you can instantly be a child again. It’s an in-between age. And it can be so challenging, but on the other hand—beautiful and ever so rewarding. Sometimes I feel like I’m talking down to you, and at others I feel like you need my guidance more than ever. More and more, you seem to understand adult concepts and feelings. It…

To my dear Cara Happy birthday, my beautiful eldest daughter! We’re so proud of the girl that you have become. You’re practical, capable, and physically strong and able. You have a lot of courage and you’re always the first to try something out. But more than that, you’re caring, warm and affectionate. I love our cuddles together and you’re the first to hug me when you can see I’m feeling low. Your infectious laugh pulls everybody in, and you make everyone welcome once you’ve let them in your circle. So let’s learn a little more about your year. Loving Your Siblings Your relationship with your siblings continues to flourish – and it’s so beautiful! I love watching you share your computer game wins with Jonah. And your imaginary games with Lydia are quite amazing. You care for dolls, build forts, and create dream worlds together. Lost Your First Tooth This…

To Lydia Happy birthday my little sweetheart. It seems like you’ve been with us forever, and yet you are only three. We’re so proud of the kind, caring, and confident little girl that you are. You melt everybody’s heart with your kind words and smiles. You really are a treasure. Every year I write to you with the little details of your year that we never want to forget. One day, I hope that you will read my letters and they’ll make you smile. Your 3rd Birthday Party Was So Much Fun So many of your friends came to your birthday party, and they loved celebrating with you. It was one of the best days. Loving Your Siblings Eleanor is fast becoming your best playmate. You love being an older sister and a younger sister. Cara is your ultimate best buddy but also the one you fall out with the…

Dear Eleanor, My little sweetheart – Eleanor, you are 1! Happy birthday! This is my first birthday letter to you. How much joy you have brought to our family in just one year. I hope that one day you will read my letter to you, and it will make you smile. So let’s learn about your first year! After your birth, we spent the first week in bed together because you were so sleepy and didn’t want to feed much. We got to know each other so well, and it wasn’t long before you were feeding voraciously and very frequently, just like a newborn should. Weeks turned to months, your personality shines through more every day, and we get to know you even better. A is for apple Your siblings started to call you “a” as in “a is for as apple” because that was the first sound you started…

My dear Cara, It’s your birthday, you are 5, Cara – that’s half a decade! You are no longer the tiny baby that came in a hurry at home. Now, you’re a big brave girl venturing out into the world without me. It is both exhilarating and heartbreaking! And what a year you’ve had! Since you stepped out in to the world, we’ve learned so much about you. I feel like our bond has strengthened so much over the last 12 months. We both healed from the weaning process and you’ve become my little bestie again. How to describe you? Capable. Tactile. Fun. Loving. You’re a girly girl who loves dresses, fun hairstyles, dolls etc, but you’re not flouncy. You love rough and tumble, Alexa farts, stories, slime, and things falling off cliffs. You get super enthusiastic about the things you love. It’s very infectious! You’ve been so helpful since…

To my Jonah Sammy – happy 7th birthday, Jonah! Happy birthday, my lovely boy. How has your 7th birthday crept around so fast? Here I am again, writing a letter to you about how much you’ve changed in only a year. As you transition from a little kid to a big kid, we’ve learned so much more about you, and who you are. Curious, studious, quiet, detailed – dare I say verging on nerdy? Sometimes daft, and yet totally loveable are just some of the ways I can describe you. It must be part of growing up, but as you get older, you like to spend much more time on your own. I guess it’s also a big part of your personality. I still struggle with not seeing you all day because you’re at school. Family love You’re still in love with your sisters, although sometimes you play a little…

Dear Cara, Every time I write your birthday letter, I’m never lost for words. You are so full of personality and life. You are unashamedly strong, brave, and bold. It’s your 4th birthday, Cara, and we’re so happy to celebrate with you! This year, I’m remembering how we made the most of every moment in our new garden over summer – we shot water bombs, giggled and splashed in our paddling pool, and gazed at the clouds from the trampoline, exhausted from bouncing. When we’re not at home, the beach is your favourite place to be, and you’re always wearing shorts. In fact, you’re still wearing them in November! You have a real eye for choosing your own clothes and rarely let me choose your clothes or dress you. You totally own it! Sometimes we end up with some unique style choices, but they’re all your own. You still love…
