I love cookies, and I love all the flavours of Christmas – so what better recipe for a breastfeeding mama than festive lactation cookies?

My festive lactation cookies are an adaptation of the recipe for lactation cookies over at BellyBelly.com.au.

They’re light, moist, sweet, and incredibly festive.

So what makes festive lactation cookies festive? I’ve added warming spices, zesty orange, dried cranberries, and sweet juicy raisins to the classic mixture to impart a true taste of Christmas.

How do festive lactation cookies work?

The festive lactation cookies contain three galactagogue (increasing milk supply), or lactogenic (supporting milk supply) foods:

  • Brewer’s yeast
  • Linseed (also known as flaxseed)
  • Oats

Bear in the mind that the best way to increase your milk supply is to feed your baby more frequently. These cookies are not a medical solution to low milk supply. See a feeding specialist if you believe you have low milk supply.

Brewer’s yeast

Brewer’s yeast provides a range of amino acids along with vitamins B1, B2 and niacin, and iron. It also contains plant oestrogens. Its nutritional profile, plus these oestrogens, may be the reason it works for so many women.

Solgar Brewer's Yeast

Don’t substitute brewer’s yeast with any other kind of yeast. It’s not the same. I use Solgar Brewer’s yeast which is natural and high quality.

You can get brewer’s yeast from health food shops, Amazon.co.uk, or Amazon.com.

Linseed

Also known as flaxseed, linseed contains omega-3, iron, zinc, calcium, vitamin B1 and B6.

Harvest Morn Milled Linseed

If you’re in the UK, get your linseed from Aldi. It’s about £1.50 a bag which is much cheaper than Amazon!

Oats

Said to increase milk production, BellyBelly notes that oats are full of saponins which are both antibiotic and anti-inflammatory. Oats are so comforting and nourishing, and make a great addition to a tasty biscuit.

Festive lactation cookies

These festive lactation cookies have all the goodness of regular lactation cookies, but with a delicious festive twist. As with regular lactation cookies, they contain brewer's yeast, linseed, and oats, which help support healthy milk production.

Ingredients

  • 128 g self-raising wholemeal flour
  • 113 g butter
  • 150 g soft light brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp ground linseed
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 2 tsp mixed spice
  • 2 tbsp Brewer's yeast
  • 1/2 tsp Maldon or himalayan salt
  • 135 g rolled oats
  • 40 g chopped dried cranberries
  • 40 g chopped dried raisins
  • 1 medium orange (zested)

Instructions 

  • In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and the sugar until light and fluffy.

  • Add the egg and beat in well.

  • In a separate bowl, combine the linseed with the water. Let it sit for 3 minutes before adding to the mix.

  • Add the orange zest to the mix.

  • Add the brewer's yeast and salt.

  • Sieve the flour and spice into the mix. By now, your house should be smelling like Christmas!
  • Add the oats, cranberries, and raisins, and mix well.

  • Shape spoonfuls of the cookie mix into balls and place on a lined and greased baking sheet.

  • Flatten the balls a little to form a cookie shape.

  • Bake the festive lactation cookies at 180°C/356°F/Gas Mark 4. And obviously try one!

They taste so good! I’ll be making another batch of these over Christmas to snack on while breastfeeding.

I’m not sure whether or not they’ve increased my milk supply, but you never know. And with ingredients so healthy and tasty, they make a great snack.

    • Thank you! It’s so hard to tell how effective they are. I don’t pump regularly like I used to, and Jonah feeds only a few times during the day. But it can’t hurt to get all that goodness inside from the healthy ingredients. Some women swear by them! Also they taste awesome…hooray for cookies. 🙂
