What’s the best Glossier lip balm? Ah, most people ask this question when presented with all of those dreamy flavours on their website—Birthday Cake anyone?
Well, wonder no more. In this post I review all of the currently available Glossier Lip Balm Dotcom lip balms, including 5 of the limited edition 2025 holiday flavours, plus one Balm Dotcom that sadly went unavailable while I was writing this.
Yes, that’s 17 lip balms. You’d better know how much I love these lip balms! All to help you find your best Glossier lip balm!
Who Is Glossier?
Glossier is the minimalist skincare-first, makeup-second brand beloved across social media. Their products are inspired by real life, and centre on the fun of your own personal beauty journey.
My beauty journey is primarily about skincare first, but growing up in the eighties and nineties, skincare wasn’t seen as hugely important. In fact, skin care seemed more transformative to me than makeup, as I felt embarrassed and ashamed of the psoriasis on my scalp, hairline, and body.
So, while my friends were focused on makeup looks, I was committed to my skincare routine.
Fast-forward a few decades, and Glossier really speaks to me. They’re not entirely natural, but their ethos towards fun, wellbeing, and accessible beauty really speaks to nineties babes like me.

Balm Dotcom is one of those products that embodies skincare with a touch of makeup, so of course—I love it.
Balm Dotcom—A Cult Favourite
And it’s not just me—Glossier Balm Dotcom is a cult favourite.
In fact, it’s one of the company’s best selling items and one of their OG products. It’s available in 11 flavours, many tinted, including an unscented, untinted version which can be used universally.
Whatever your flavour, there’s a balm for everyone in the lineup varying from sweet gourmand delights like Black Cherry and Wild Fig, to classic lip balm flavours like Mint, and bold offerings like creamy Banana Pudding.
Who could live without tinted balms, anyway? They’re so easy to wear.
I like colour on my lips most of the time, but lipstick often doesn’t work for me unless I’m going “out out” without the kids , so I can obsessively check if it’s still intact. Also, I like to apply things without needing a mirror—and if my lipstick doesn’t look just perfect, it irks me.
In this respect, tinted lip balms are so forgiving, especially for busy mommies like me! I also really love how they primarily keep my lips comfortable and protected for a good deal of time. Maybe that’s why I own so many lip balms! 🤭
But First, a Little Balm Dotcom History
Did you know there’s a fascinating back story behind the formula of Balm Dotcom?

Balm Dotcom’s been around since 2014. Glossier’s idea was simple: a clear universal balm that can be used anywhere. A super-versatile salve for lips, cuticles, and dry patches.
The balm was originally formulated with good ‘ole lanolin and beeswax, and it clearly wasn’t vegan. And the packaging was different too. It came in a tube, like a small paint tube, and without a dedicated applicator tip. Users applied the balm with their fingers.
But in 2023, the brand actually reformulated the lip balm to be vegan by replacing the lanolin and beeswax ingredients. In a wise move, they also introduced a new hygienic applicator tip.
Unfortunately, the new formula didn’t go down well with loyal fans, who questioned the balm’s new texture and feel.
So, in 2024, Glossier reintroduced the original formula. Luckily, the new hygienic applicator tip stayed!
Now in 2025, all Balm Dotcom lip balms are formulated to the original recipe.
I love this story. It highlights the power of consumers in the directions brands will take, and secures Glossier’s commitment to bringing the lip balm we know and love back into our skin care collections. It’s power to the people!
Okay, so let’s turn our attention to finding the best Glossier lip balm, and first—the ingredients. I rarely buy without checking them first.
Balm Dotcom Ingredients
These are the ingredients for Balm Dotcom listed on Glossier’s website. I’ve included two ingredients lists. One is for the Original Balm, so we can see the base formula. I’ve also listed ingredients for Sparkling Rosé balm so that we can see the differences. Other balm’s ingredients will vary, so check them carefully.
Ingredients for Original Balm Dotcom
Petrolatum, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Beeswax/Cera Alba/Cire d’Abeille, Lanolin, Theobroma Grandiflorum Seed Butter, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol, BHT.
Ingredients for Sparkling Rosé Balm Dotcom
Petrolatum, Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil, Beeswax/Cera Alba/Cire d’Abeille, Lanolin, Flavor/Aroma, Theobroma Grandiflorum Seed Butter, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Extract, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tocopherol, Silica, Synthetic Fluorphlogopite, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Tin Oxide, BHT, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract, Benzyl Benzoate, Limonene, Citrus Aurantium Peel Oil, Hexyl Cinnamal, Linalool, Geranyl Acetate, Linalyl Acetate, Rose Ketones, Pinene, Citral, Benzaldehyde, Terpineol, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Red 7 Lake (CI 15850), Yellow 5 Lake (CI 19140), Yellow 6 Lake (CI 15985).
Formula Details
How Is Balm Dotcom Sweetened? The balm is sweetened with natural stevia extract.
How Does Balm Dotcom Get Its Scent/Aroma/Flavour? Scent/flavour is listed as flavor/aroma, alongside orange peel oil and various essential oil components listed as per labelling regulations for allergens.
How Is Balm Dotcom Coloured, Tinted, & Finished? Colours, tints, and finishes come from natural and synthetic mineral sources (e.g. iron oxides, titanium dioxide, synthetic fluorphlogopite) and synthetic lake dyes.
Antioxidants: You’ll find plenty of antioxidants in Balm Dotcom, including rosemary leaf extract, vitamin E, and synthetic BHT.
Could the Formula of Balm Dotcom Be Improved?
Three ingredients are a red flag for my natural people. Firstly, you might not like to use petrolatum, since it’s a petrochemical byproduct. However, perhaps controversially speaking as a natural beauty blogger, I don’t have a problem with petrolatum whatsoever. It is a good emollient and it’s cheap.
But there’s some controversy surrounding BHT. Some studies show negative effects, and some show the complete opposite. Until then, rest assured BHT is considered safe at the concentrations used in skincare. Personally, I’d be happy to see BHT removed from all products given the host of other antioxidants available to skincare manufacturers.
Finally, some balms use lake dyes for tint. Lake dyes are controversial—they’re approved by the FDA and considered safe to use in regulated amounts. However, some clean beauty brands avoid them because they’re synthetic and potentially harmful in unregulated amounts.
Lake dyes are, however, extremely useful in cosmetics formulating as they help to create vibrant colours in stable formulas. Surprisingly, lake dyes are approved in Europe, where the rules are often more stringent. You can read more about lake dyes here.
Balm Dotcom Packaging
Balm Dotcom comes in a plastic tube contained within a recyclable cardboard outer package. Unfortunately, the lip balm tube itself is not recyclable kerbside in the UK (but you can use a specialist recycling service like TerraCycle).

The large plastic slanted doe foot applicator makes for beautifully easy application.
As you’ve probably experienced with these types of applicators, they can get gunked up pretty quickly—especially with tinted lip balms. Be prepared to regularly wipe them with a tissue. It’s no biggie for me, I just prefer a nice clean tube with no gunk!
How to Choose The Best Glossier Balm
To find the best Glossier lip balm, you must first meditate under a full moon whilst holding a sprig of mugwort…
Okay, I’m kidding.
Just ask yourself, where do I want to use my balm? Do I want a lip balm just for my lips? Or do I want a balm I can use on my dry bits all-over? Ladies, here are some suggestions for the best balms for you:
“Use Anywhere” Balm Dotcom
Choose an untinted Original, Coconut, & Mint to leave no trace. Or choose a lightly tinted option such as Rose, Mango, Banana Pudding, or Lavender.
Tinted Balm Dotcom—Well Pigmented To Show Up On Camera
In this case, Espresso, Black Cherry, Strawberry, Wild Fig, Hot Cocoa, Cookie Butter & Gingersnap are your girls.
Does the Month End in -Ber? The Best Glossier Lip Balm for Autumn & Winter
It must be the season for Espresso, Black Cherry, Strawberry, Wild Fig, Hot Cocoa, Cookie Butter, Gingersnap, Peppermint Bark, Birthday & Sparkling Rosé—my favourite Balm Dotcoms for winter months.
Sparkly Balm Dotcom?
Well then, Birthday, Peppermint Bark, & Sparkling Rosé will bring cheer to your dull days and enliven any party outfit.
Good for Bedtime Balm Dotcom
I wear Banana Pudding in bed every night. What? Don’t you know that bananas help you sleep? And the tint is so sheer. Lavender is just a bit too tinted, and doesn’t smell like real lavender so I wouldn’t use it at bedtime. Top picks are Original, Coconut, & Mint (for those who like mint). That said, I wouldn’t personally use Mint at bedtime as it’s too stimulating for me!
Balm Dotcom Texture & Finish
Balm Dotcom is a thick, creamy, and occlusive balm that’s similar to Vaseline, or Dr. Lipp. When it’s not tinted, it’s slightly opaque in colour.
Once on the lips, Balm Dotcom is reasonably comfortable. You can definitely feel it on your lips, but it’s not greasy or unpleasant. The finish can look quite waxy and matte—not at all shiny like an oil. It forms a protective barrier on the lips without sinking in for quite some time.
Yes, it’s thick and that’s part of what gives it its staying power. It feels really protective on the lips when it’s cold outside.
The original version doesn’t have any kind of discernible fragrance from its ingredients i.e. it doesn’t smell like shea, or lanolin, which can often have a natural scent.
Balm Dotcom Longevity & Wear
Let’s talk about the tints in the tinted varieties. After many uses I discovered that Balm Dotcom is really easy to build in layers. You can start subtly, and build up to quite the tint! Because of this, a bit of clear lip liner will stop the balm bleeding out over the edge of the lip line. I’m really impressed with how much colour I can get on my lips without them looking over-balmed.
Because the tinted formulas are somewhat active on the lips, It can be a little hard to get the tints to apply evenly. I actually think using a clean finger here to gently blend the colour on the lips really works well. (Psht, maybe the old design was on to something!).
Once on your lips, Balm Dotcom wears well for a good part of the day. It will stick to your lips faithfully for the first 2 hours after application. You’ll probably need to reapply it after 4 hours, though.
Black Cherry Wear Test
I decided to wear Balm Dotcom and photograph the results every hour to test its longevity. Here’s a picture of me wearing freshly applied Black Cherry Balm Dotcom.
Now scroll the slideshow to see Black Cherry after 1, 2, 3, and 4 hours of wear. It does wear so well!
I’m really happy with how long Balm Dotcom stays on my lips, it definitely has the longest wear of any lip balm I’ve tried.
Balm Dotcom Shades—Let’s Meet The Lineup
Let’s look at how Glossier describes each balm now, so that we can choose the best Glossier lip balm for you. This is the order they appear in on the website. PS: I don’t know why they ordered them this way, perhaps they’re ordered by “Bestselling”?
Note that Banana Pudding is not currently available and is likely a Summer 2025 limited edition, but you can still get it from Space NK and other retailers.

Please remember that your preferences may vary, and this is for fun only. Obviously, flavour preferences vary from person to person and flavour evaluation is subjective—therefore, everyone experiences taste differently. So, if a balm tempts you, you should try it!
Now, let’s try these balms.
My “Before” Shot
For reference, my lips are well pigmented and don’t show subtle tints very well. Here’s a picture of me with no lip product on, for reference.

Okay, so I debated what order to put the lip balms in. I value your time, so I’m not going to build suspense by making you scroll through 16 other lip balms to read my favourite. Although because you’re here right now, you’re probably interested in my opinions on lip balms! Anyway, let’s rank the best Balm Dotcoms!
Wild Fig (My Ranking: #1)
They say: Honeyed fig with a coral tint.
Let’s look at the balm at the number 1 spot. Which is the best Glossier lip balm for me? My favourite Balm Dotcom—is Wild Fig!

It wasn’t hard for me to choose my favourite. Wild Fig is so utterly wearable—even though I have cool-toned skin I often buy warm-toned lip balms to warm up my complexion, and this one works for me perfectly.
Why do I rank it so highly? The tint is a lovely warm, orange-coral hue that’s reminiscent of the inside of a luscious fig. It has enough pigment to show up well in photos and video meetings. It’s bright without being garish. For an orange, it’s pretty neutral also.
The flavour is absolutely gorgeous—light, sweet, fruity, and clean. It really does remind me of eating figs with my family in Greece on a sun-kissed beach. Take me back!
A tint and taste combo made in heaven.

Cookie Butter (My Ranking: #2)
They say: Speculoos with a warm caramel tint.
As a huge biscuit fiend, I was very excited to try this one. Why? A calorie-free way to enjoy that warm, burnt sugar and cinnamon flavour is always going to be enticing! Luckily, Cookie Butter is my second best Glossier lip balm!

Let me say, on first swipe I was not disappointed. The flavour is extremely reminiscent of that moreish biscuit treat, Speculoos. The tint is rather lovely as well, a gorgeous warm caramel that works beautifully in the darker months, and probably quite nicely in the warmer months too if you prefer neutrals.

Rose (My Ranking: #3)
They say: Fragrant roses with a pink tint.
Poor old Rose receives polarising reviews online. I think this is always the case with floral scents and rose-scented beauty products: “huh, my Grandma would like this one”. Get a grip, girls. Rose will always be a beautiful fragrance, and in fact it is one of the best Glossier lip balms in my opinion.

I love Rose for its subtle cool pink tint. It’s very much a Your Lips But Better balm on my skin tone. Beautiful Rose brings a very delicate, flushed look to the lips. The taste is pretty good. It’s a bit like Turkish Delight. Yum.

Hot Cocoa (My Ranking: #4)
They say: Rich chocolate with a warm cocoa tint.
Now on to Hot Cocoa, which is one of the limited edition holiday Balm Dotcom flavours.

I was expecting this to be like Espresso and Black Cherry. The flavour is superb! I love it. The chocolate flavour is rich, comforting, and very edible! The colour is a gorgeous warm brown that really stands out. I’m a big fan of Hot Cocoa—I think it’d make a great autumn or winter Balm Dotcom choice!

Strawberry (My Ranking: #5)
They say: Strawberries and cream with a jammy tint.
Let’s move on to luscious Strawberry. Now, Strawberry has me pulled two different ways.

On one hand, the scent is slightly unnatural to me, it’s like synthetic strawberries. But, I forgive it because I truly love the way it looks.
The tint is strong, and I love the way it wears gracefully too, leaving a lovely cool matte pink tone to my lips. I think the colour is better suited to cool tones than Black Cherry. It’s a really strong contender!

Sparkling Rosé (My Ranking: #6)
They say: Fizzy rosé with a shimmery baby pink tint.
Pink, sparkly, and utterly delicious. Oh how I love you, Sparkling Rosé!

If you like natural flavours, you will love this holiday edition Balm Dotcom! It has a really elegant and festive orange flavour.
It’s also extremely beautiful, and I like it more than Birthday Balm Dotcom. Like Birthday, it has a gorgeous sparkly effect, but it also has a pink tint. I’m getting a lot of nineties vibes from this one. It’s one of my favourites!

Birthday (My Ranking: #7)
They say: Rich buttercream with subtle sparkly shimmer.
Birthday Cake has a subtle, grown-up sparkle that’s really beautiful on bright and crisp winter mornings and candle-lit autumn-winter evenings.

It sits well on the lips, and the warm vanilla flavour isn’t at all intrusive. In fact, on first hit it’s actually quite addictive. Birthday really does taste like a birthday cake, and you should definitely try it!

Banana Pudding (My Ranking: #8)
They say: Creamy banana with a custard tint.
Banana Pudding is without a doubt one of my favourite Balm Dotcom flavours.

This is coming from someone who shirks every banana flavoured offering going, and doesn’t really like bananas that much, either. It’s just so creamy and comforting. I’d definitely choose it over Original.

Black Cherry (My Ranking: #9)
They say: Ripened cherries with a burgundy tint.
Black Cherry is a warm red tint. It’s reminiscent of the stain on your lips after picking ripe cherries off the cherry tree, that lovely warm and vibrant red.

I’m impressed at how much pigment Black Cherry gives my lips. I definitely need a lip liner to stop the colour straying, though. The flavour is really lovely—sweet, fruity, with that distinctive cherry tang.

Espresso (My Ranking: #10)
They say: Roasted coffee with a mocha tint.
The flavour is great—subtle roasted coffee, and do I detect a hint of chocolate in there too? The mocha tint is a somewhat neutral chocolate brown colour.

This would be the perfect tinted balm to wear in autumn or winter. I do feel if I applied it without a mirror, I’d need to check it wasn’t drifting off my lips. Blending it with a finger seems like a good idea, and harks back to the pre-applicator tips of Balm Dotcom.

Original (My Ranking: #11)
They say: Fragrance-free and untinted.
It’s thick, it’s gorgeous, it’s kinda glossy.

What’s not to love? It really is a take anywhere balm!

Lavender (My Ranking: #12)
They say: Honey lavender with a lilac tint.
Let’s preface this by saying that this lip balm absolutely does NOT taste like lavender to me, especially not the essential oil of lavender which is extremely distinctive.

It does have a synthetic-but-pleasant clean vaguely reminiscent of lavender scent, which I can’t really complain about. I do love the lilac tint, it puts a veil of cool lilac over my lips which is subtle, but welcome.
However, I probably wouldn’t buy it again as I feel like it’s a poor excuse for a lavender scent.

Coconut (My Ranking: #13)
They say: Beachy coconut and untinted.
Nothing extraordinary to report about this balm, but it’s not one of the best Glossier lips balms in my opinion.

The flavour is okay. I probably wouldn’t choose it over Original though. I ranked it down because it could’ve been so much better. The flavour is just a bit bland. I usually love coconut-scented products. Sorry, Coconut!

Peppermint Bark (My Ranking: #14)
They say: Minty chocolate with subtle ruby shimmer.
The first hit of Peppermint Bark Dotcom is not peppermint, it is chocolate. There is no tint, just ruby coloured sparkles suspended in a clear base.

Peppermint Bark looks different to Birthday in the tube, as the sparkles are actually ruby coloured. I’m not entirely convinced it looks massively different on the lips, though. I mean, you can tell there’s a shimmer finish, but it looks only subtly “more pink” than Birthday.
If you love mint lip balms, you’ll be pleased to know there’s a slight tingle with Peppermint Bark. The only reason I rank this down is because, for me, it doesn’t give me anything huge over Birthday, and I prefer vanilla over mint. YMMV.

Mint (My Ranking: #15)
They say: Cool mint and untinted.
This is a proper mint lip balm that really cools and tingles. If you love mint, you won’t want to miss it! As well as being thoroughly minty, it’s also a little bit sweeter than the other Balm Dotcom flavours.

Why people wear mint lip balm outside in winter is beyond me though, the menthol makes my lips feel so cold. I’d definitely come back to this in summer though!
If you really love mint lip balms in winter, then try the limited edition Peppermint Bark, which has a far milder mint flavour.

Mango (My Ranking: #16)
They say: Tropical mango with a peach tint.
Mango features a sweet and fruity mango flavour, which I like—although it does taste slightly synthetic even to a green hippy.

As for the tint? The peach tint is barely noticeable on me. All this being considered, I’m not a fan of Mango, although I can appreciate why people would love Mango as a summer choice of Balm Dotcom.

Gingersnap (My Ranking: #17)
They say: Warm ginger with a toasted taupe tint.
Oh Gingersnap. Just look at that merry and bright packaging! As a special edition, I had such high hopes for you, but I’m afraid you’re coming in last place.

I do like Gingersnap—the colour is a gorgeous gingery shade, and it’s a lot like Cookie Butter, but probably a bit more rosy looking. The deal breaker for me is the taste of Gingersnap. It has a weird almost musky aspect to its aroma. It’s a little off putting to me. I would definitely choose Cookie Butter over Gingersnap!

FAQs
How Long Does Balm Dotcom Last?
In my opinion, it lasts up to 4 hours. The first 2 hours, it really does stay put—maintaining its shine and colour and feeling comfortable on the lips.
By 4 hours, it is starting to fade and it’s not as shiny any more, however my lips still feel moisturised with effects that last all day. In case you missed it, see the photos of the wear of Black Cherry wear test further up the page.
Is Balm Dotcom Worth It?
It sure is! £16 for a big 15ml tube that’s sure to last a long time.
Is Balm Dotcom Just Vaseline?
No, absolutely not. It’s an emollient and occlusive balm base of petrolatum, castor oil, beeswax, lanolin, shea butter, and sunflower seed oil. This blend is really lovely and contains lots of nourishing natural oils alongside petrolatum as the predominant ingredient.
Is Balm Dotcom Vegan?
No, it contains beeswax and lanolin.
Is Glossier Balm Dotcom Natural?
Yes, it does contain natural ingredients but also uses some synthetic ingredients. I don’t see Glossier as a brand who leans towards the green camp.
How Does Balm Dotcom Compare To Burt’s Bees?
Burt’s Bees tinted lip balms are much more like a traditional lipstick. Balm Dotcom feels more protective than Burt’s Bees.
Can You Use Balm Dotcom on Damaged, Dry and Flaky Lips?
Yes, I’d definitely use the original formula to nurse my lips back to good health. At the moment, I use Allies of Skin Lip Balm as it has no fragrance, no colour, and it’s enriched with ceramides.
