Can you think of a better reason to blend your own essential oils than to create sensual essential oil blends?

Since time began, women have been creating sensual essential oil blends to invoke feminine energy, shift their libido, and bring about emotional and physical openness.

There are so many ways to use these sexy blends—whether it’s simple beauty routines or goddess rituals: think decadent baths, silky massage oils, and sensual perfumery blends.

Using sensual essential oils blends in body oil for massage

In this article I’m going to share eight sensual essential oil blends to inspire you. Plus, we’re going to discover the most sensual essential oils and their qualities so that you can blend up your own fragrant sensual blend.

So if you’re looking for ideas of which blends and oils are sensual, sexy, and support feminine energy, then read on!

So What Exactly Is Sensuality?

To me, sensuality isn’t just sexuality or being sexy. It’s about feeling fully connected to my body. It’s an ability to involve all five senses for maximum enjoyment and to increase my own personal power.

Sensuality is feminine power, and scent can help us to feel fully connected

This personal power bolsters my self-confidence, helping me to reclaim my body and celebrate pleasure as a natural, healthy state. As someone who often lacks body confidence and ability to “let go”, this is transformative.

I think it’s harder as a mum to get into the zone needed to really enjoy sensual moments. And I’m not just talking about sex. I mean pleasure in all its forms.

For me, that’s where scent comes in.

Scent is our most primitive sense, it’s the closest thing to the emotional brain. It penetrates you. You love it, and you want to be part of it. – Isabelle Ramsay-Brackstone

Our sense of smell has the power to instantly bring about the perfect mood for romance. Scent has the wonderful ability to reduce stress, help us feel sensual, pique our feminine energy, and escape the mundanity of everyday life. Scent can be playful, flirtatious, and mysterious. It is evocative—in short, it can be anything you want it to be.

Scent is of the elements, it connects us to our true selves; increasing our wellbeing and our ability to truly release and feel like the sexual beings we are. It truly transports us. Scent can also ground us or release us, to help heal our past hurts. No sense has the powerful role that smell does to evoke feelings of sensuality and intimacy.

At the Heart of Scent, Are Pure Essential Oils

Precious oils extracted from the leaves, stems, fruits, seeds, sap, and bark of plants. These libido enhancing essential oils mimic and enhance our own natural scents—for an aphrodisiac effect.

A selection of sensual essential oils including rose and lavender

What’s amazing about making your own sensual essential oil blend is that you can make it truly personal to you, adding your own touch to your romantic essential oil blends to make the perfect oil.

And talking about perfect oils, this post was inspired by the delightful Scentiana Sensual Body Oil. This aphrodisiac aromatherapy oil supports your whole system, since it contains Ashwagandha and Arnica plus exquisitely feminine and uplifting jasmine, rose, vanilla, and bitter orange. It’s like a silky cocoon to support body and mind, and is perfect for sensual romantic massage with your partner.

At your fingertips you have the power of individual essential oils that are long-prized for their sensual qualities.

There’s also science to back up what folklore has long known.

The olfactory bulb is directly connected to the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls memory, emotions, and desire.

Therefore, a simple whiff of scent can bring about intense feelings of nostalgia, comfort, or desire, making a scent “sexy” simply because it reminds you of a previous positive or intimate experience.

Of course, it’s important to know how to use essential oils safely.

                Staying Safe Using Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be diluted before skin use, used with care around children and during pregnancy, and never taken internally unless under the guidance of a qualified professional.

Likewise, if you have high blood pressure or any other medical condition, consult with a doctor before trying these blends.

Remember to conduct a patch test on your skin before using any of the blends.

Now, before we jump in—let’s take a brief look at how to create your blends:

How to Create Your Sensual Essential Oil Blends

Blending Your Oils for Olfactory Review

If you’re just starting out in aromatherapy, drops are a great way to blend the individual oils together so that you can review their scent, and alter the mixture as you go.

A woman blending essential oils in the kitchen

However when it comes to adding them to a carrier oil, more precision is needed to ensure safety.

You’ll also need to weigh drops if you want your perfume blends to be consistent so that you can make the same blend again.

                Advice from AromaWeb:

“One drop of one essential oil may be bigger or smaller than another because of the viscosity and temperature of the oil and the size of the dropper or orifice reducer. As such, measuring by the drop is not the most accurate method of measuring essential or carrier oils, but it is generally okay for creating small topical blends and recipes for your own, individual use.”

If you plan to make sensual oils blends regularly, why not invest in some scales to ensure accuracy? I use these scales for all my skincare formulations.

Start with small amounts to be sure you’re happy with the blend. You can always scale up later!

And remember to never apply undiluted essential oils directly to the skin or hair. Instead, dilute your blend with a carrier oil.

My own blends of sensual essential oils in tiny clear bottles

Above: the blends I made for myself and my husband for Valentine’s day.

                Equipment needed:

You can make these blends without any special equipment and using your regular kitchen tools like bowls, small jugs, and spoons. However, I have listed what I use as an aspiring skincare formulator.

                1. Accurate measuring scales to ensure the correct concentration of essential oils in carrier oil, bath salts, etc.
                2. Small glass prep bowls to blend the essential oils into. If you don’t have these, you could also use an egg cup.
                3. For thick absolutes or CO2 extracts, you’ll need a water bath to gently warm for easy dropping from a pipette. I use a small kitchen bowl and glass pipettes.
                4. If you like, you can add your blend to an essential oil storage bottle. Use dark amber glass to protect the contents from light. I used clear glass here to show you the contents!
                5. Glass stirring rod or silicone spatula for blending oils together.
                6. Small beakers for handling carrier oils, bath salts, etc.

Here are my recommendations for blending your sensual essential oils for use:

                1. When blending essential oils, we usually add the heaviest oil first. This makes it easier to mix your chosen oils together. Additionally, it works well from a perfumery point of view—as heavier oils are usually base notes.
                2. Create a synergy blend by first mixing together your chosen essential oils (I’ve included more about synergy blends down the page).
                3. As you add each oil, inhale its aroma. Do you like it? Now you can take in how each oil layers through, and make any adjustments.
                4. Measure out your carrier oil into a small beaker or storage bottle.
                5. Add the appropriate weight or drops of sensual essential oil blend to the beaker or storage bottle.
                6. Again, for safety, I highly recommend using scales and not drops for measuring concentrations of your powerful essential oils blends to carrier oils, salts, lotions, etc.

Use the following dilutions for these applications:

                For Body Oils and Massage

For accuracy and safety, dilute a 1-2% concentration of essential oils for leave-on perfume oils, body oils, and massage oils.

A guy enjoying a sensual massage from his partner

Here’s how I blend my body oils. First, I decide how much body oil I would like to make. Let’s say I want to make 20g of sensual body oil. So I know that at a 2% concentration of essential oil, I will need 19.6g of carrier oil, and my essential oils at 2% will be 0.4g. Using an online percentage calculator makes it even easier.

The drop counts given below should give you slightly more than 0.4g of oil blend to work with. Please do weigh them, though, as drops aren’t accurate.

However, if you are just getting started with aromatherapy or don’t have—or wish to use—scales, then 6-12 drops per 30ml/1 oz is standard for adults.

This works well for body oils and perfumed oil that you can apply to your pulse points.

You could also add the same quantity of sensual essential oil blend to your favorite unscented lotion.

Take your fragranced oils out with you and use the fragrant aroma to remind you of romantic times with your partner

Bottle up your oil and enjoy a sensual massage with your partner. You could even bottle some up in a rollerball and use it as perfume oil to bring about feelings of comfort and closeness to your partner when you’re apart.

Remember to label your creations and add the date you made them. They have a shelf life of about 12 months.

For Bath Oils or Bath Salts

A fragrant couples bath is the perfect way to cleanse away the day and set a romantic tone.

A bottle of beautiful bath oil made with a sensual oil recipe

If you’re new to aromatherapy, remember that simply dropping essential oils directly into the bath can cause skin irritation. So first, dilute them in a suitable carrier oil at 1-2% concentration or 6-12 drops per 30ml/1 oz.

If you want the oils to disperse in the bath and not float on the top, use a dispersing agent like Polysorbate-20 (for lighter carrier oils) or Polysorbate-80 (for heavier carrier oils).

You could also consider a pre-made Dispersing Bath Oil, like this one from Absolute Aromas. Remember to stick to a 1-2% dilution. The same applies for bath salts.

                For Face Oils

The blends given here are primarily intended for body use, however if you want to use them on the face, use 0.5%-1%.

                For Diffusers

Diffuser blends can differ depending on what type of diffuser you own. To use the oils in a romantic diffuser blend, follow your manufacturers instructions for the best results.

                Suggested Carrier Oils

Here are my recommended carrier oils and why you should consider them:

Pouring oil onto the back in a sensual massage
                • Sunflower oil: Cheap/readily available.
                • Jojoba oil: Has a beautiful skin feel as it’s actually a liquid wax.
                • Sweet almond oil: Best for dry, sensitive skin—but not for nut allergy sufferers.
                • Grapeseed oil: Light, readily absorbed.
                • Apricot kernel oil: Soft and glides smoothly across the skin without being greasy.

Now, for some essential oil magic! Have you come across synergistic blends before?

                What Is a Synergy Blend?

Synergy blends combine multiple oils to create a therapeutic effect from the individual oils that’s greater than the sum of their individual parts. They’re often described as 2 + 2 = 8.

To create a synergy blend, mix your essential oils together first before adding the carrier oil, rather than just dropping them individually into your carrier oil.

Now let’s take a look at the first blend!

                The Blends

                1. Rose & Skin

Rose & Skin Sensual Essential Oil Blend

Rose & Skin is my favourite personal fragrance—it quite rightly shines the spotlight firmly on Rose for a soft, heart-opening, emotionally intimate sensual oil that will tenderly kiss your past hurts and help you to love fully, and feel the euphoria of love.

                The blend:

                • 9 drops Rose
                • 6 drops Sandalwood
                • 3 drops Vanilla (CO₂ or absolute)

                How to blend:

                • Add 3 drops of Vanilla
                • Add 6 drops of Sandalwood
                • Add 9 drops of Rose
                • Mix well with a silicone spoon

Earthy sandalwood grounds, while creamy vanilla adds warmth, comfort, and familiarity. This skin-like sensual essential oil blend is tender, slow, and deeply connecting.

Inspired by moonlit evening walks, Jasmine Selene takes over your senses with the heady aroma of jasmine for a romantic blend that’s lush, feminine, and quietly intoxicating.

                Blend:

                • 4 drops Jasmine

                • Add 8 drops of Bergamot
                • Mix well with a silicone spoon

Jasmine brings sensual confidence, ylang ylang gently softens any inhibitions on the part of you or your lover, and bergamot keeps it light and easy-going, so things never get overwhelming. It is truly effortless desire.

                3. Sacred Ground

Sacred Ground Sensual Essential Oil Blend

This blend uses plant wisdom to draw energy downward into the body. It has real aphrodisiac properties, yet it’s well-grounded—thanks to earthy Sandalwood and in-the-moment Patchouli. And it’s fully supportive of your feminine energy, thanks to womb-centred Clary Sage. This blend is deeply present—more felt than seen. For when you want to be together without words. Use it in a sensual massage oil, where its scent lingers until the morning.

                4. Hot Lumumba

Hot Lumumba Sensual Essential Oil Blend

Let me share with you this very personal and sultry blend that is sweet, intoxicating, and delicious. Lumumba is a silky, alcoholic hot chocolate drink that hails from Spain. The drink consists of cocoa, cream, and a shot of rum.

                Blend:

                • 2 drops Cocoa absolute
                • 2 drops Vanilla (CO₂ or absolute)
                • 1 drop Orange Sweet (probably not found in lumumba, but sweetens the oil blend)
                • Optional: 1 drop Bay Rum essential oil, or 1 drop Sweet Rum Fragrance Oil (a synthetic fragrance oil)

                How to blend:

                • Add 2 drops of Cocoa absolute. You’ll probably need to warm it first.
                • Add 2 drops of Vanilla
                • Add 1 drop of Bay Rum or Sweet Rum Fragrance Oil
                • Add 1 drop of Orange Sweet
                • Mix well with a silicone spoon

This sensual essential oil blend is inspired by the first holiday I went on with my husband. We sipped hot lumumba by the seafront, and fell even more in love with each other. If you love chocolate too, this could be your favourite sensual blend. Cocoa is a powerful aphrodisiac—boosting mood and blood flow, and bringing deep pleasure to share with your beau.

It’s a strong aphrodisiac, too, and its associations with the heart chakra encourage self-love and delicate unfolding of emotional vulnerability.

It has strong feminine energy—for this reason I used it a lot during the end of my pregnancies to envisage labour gently unfolding to birth.

The complex Rose can help reduce anxiety and improve sleep; it generally makes us feel better, which is great for improving our ability to be sensual.

                Closeup of rose

Rose oil is romantic, fragrant, healing, and divinely feminine. It deserves to be at the forefront of your essential oils blends!

Sourcing Rose Essential Oil for Sensual Blends

There are two main types of Rose species used to produce essential oils, and two main types of extraction used for each. Firstly, Rosa Damascena is typically steam-distilled to produce rose otto/essential oil, while Rosa Centifolia is more commonly extracted via solvent extraction to create a “Rose Absolute”.

What’s an absolute? An absolute is highly-concentrated, thick, and more intensely aromatic than traditionally steam-extracted essential oils.

To make an absolute, a chemical solvent is used to extract the plant’s oils with no heat. This helps to preserve the fragile nature of certain plants, like Rose, Jasmine, and Vanilla, to ensure their full aroma profile is expressed in the final product.

                Helen

How do the two types differ in their application? Rosa Damascena has a classic rich, deep scent, while Rosa Centifolia offers a lighter, honey-like aroma. As you can imagine, both methods require huge amounts of petals just to make a few drops of the essential oil—so they’re quite costly.

At the moment, I’m using steam-distilled Rose Otto essential oil from Aromantic. It costs roughly £25/$35 for 2ml at the time of writing, so it’s a great way to start making your own custom sensual blends.

                2. Jasmine

Jasmine has long been considered one of the most sensual essential oils. It’s known as “Queen of the Night”, since it releases its heady fragrance after dark.

                Jasmine

Why is Jasmine so sensual and narcotic? Well, Jasmine cleverly juxtaposes sweet and innocent floral notes with paradoxically dark and carnal undertones for an addictive sensual experience.

This romantic and intoxicating fragrance is thanks to Jasmine’s complex chemical composition. Firstly, Jasmine contains indole, a fragrance compound that quite literally smells like sh*t in large concentrations, but in low concentrations smells animalic and musky. Secondly, Jasmine contains a compound called hedione (methyl dihydrojasmonate), which scientific research has shown activates a specific area of the human hypothalamus that is linked to pleasure and sexual behaviour.

Sourcing Jasmine Essential Oil for Sensual Blends

There are several ways to buy and use Jasmine, but it’s typically bought as an absolute or an absolute that’s diluted with a carrier oil such as jojoba, which makes it easier to pour and use.

There are three main types of Jasmine Absolute for sale: Grandiflorum offers a classic, sweet, and powdery floral scent; Sambac is more exotic, musky, and fruity with green tea notes; while Officinale is a delicate, classic, slightly spicy scent, often interchangeable with Grandiflorum.

                3. Vanilla

Vanilla is universally appealing—and here’s why: it’s just so deliciously sweet and familiar; bringing about feelings of softness, comfort, and warmth. Literally everybody loves it.

                Vanilla

And guess what? Vanilla is not just a sweet scent. That’s because vanillin—the main compound in vanilla can help take your stress away and boost your mood.

Yes, Vanilla is well known as an aphrodisiac too—mimicking human pheromones and boosting estrogen production. Did you know it was even used by the ancient Aztecs, who mixed it with cocoa to boost sexual energy and libido? If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me!

Sourcing Vanilla Essential Oil for Sensual Blends

Vanilla is usually quite expensive, but I’d recommend buying Vanilla CO₂ if you can afford it. Personally, I’m working with Vanilla CO₂ with a 26% vanillin concentration at the moment.

You can source cheaper options like Vanilla Absolute, or “Vanilla Essential Oil”: which is often blended with a carrier to make it more affordable and easier to work with. It all depends on your budget and how much time you want to invest in making your sensual blends. With Vanilla being a true favourite of mine, I’m prepared to pay more for the real deal.

                4. Sandalwood

Next up is gorgeous Sandalwood oil. Its complex, soft, milky, and balsamic fragrance helps to create the most luxurious romantic atmospheres.

                Sandalwood

You probably already know that it’s been used for centuries as a potent, natural aphrodisiac—it can create some serious spark! And that’s for good reason. Sacred Sandalwood is exotic, alluring, warm, comforting, and grounding. It has a long history in spiritual practice to enhance emotional connection: mind, body, and soul.

Because of its depth and persistence (a quality which in perfumery makes it a great base note), Sandalwood oil is perfect to create an everlasting presence in your blends which truly can’t be rivalled.

The science behind it? Sandalwood has a similar chemical composition to the pheromone androsterone, which stimulates sexual desire and passion. It also calms the mind to help make space for love and romance.

Sourcing Sandalwood Essential Oil for Sensual Blends

Although Sandalwood is expensive, it’s really easy to source. It’s readily available as an essential oil that’s steam distilled.

When it comes to buying Sandalwood oil, you have two choices. The first of these is “the original” Sandalwood, which comes from India (Santalum album). It has a luxurious, creamy, and exquisite scent profile. On the other hand, Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) offers a more sustainable choice with a different scent profile (green, more woody).

Bear in mind that Australian Sandalwood has a lower santalol content than Australian Sandalwood, so its therapeutic effects may be diminished.

                5. Neroli

The scent of Neroli gloriously combines the clean fresh scent of citrus, with the calming, fragrant scent of white flowers. The result is luxurious; beguiling even.

                Neroli

Neroli is widely recognised as a natural aphrodisiac, reducing feelings of anxiety and promoting joyful closeness between partners. Neroli calms the nervous system to make way for intimacy and love.

For me, the star quality of neroli lies in its ability to allow me to fully release, submit, and let go of stress. This is so important when trying to work with sensual energy. Unfortunately for most of us, we simply cannot enjoy life fully while carrying around all that stress. And that includes romantic and sexual encounters. So invest in some Neroli essential oil and blend up a sensual couples massage oil or enjoy neroli in a warm bath to release and make room!

Like other oils in my top five, Neroli is expensive—but it’s easy to source and buy, and comes steam-distilled. Just make sure you’re buying true Neroli (Citrus Aurantium) and not a cheap fragrance oil. If you want top-tier Neroli, look for oils from the Nile Delta, Morocco, or Tunisia.

                6. Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang oil has a reputation for being one of the most intensely heady, floral, and potent essential oils available.

                Ylang Ylang

It’s considered to be sensual and provocative thanks to its exotic fragrance. In holistic circles, it is thought to increase sex drive, decrease frigidity, and create a warm, passionate atmosphere. One study even showed that Ylang Ylang improved self-esteem.

With Ylang Ylang, remember that less is more. It can be very overpowering, so gradually add it to your blends.

                7. Clary Sage

The soft, herbaceous aroma of Clary Sage is deeply calming, aphrodisiac, and renewing. It has a really strong tradition of use in essential oil blends to support women’s health.

                Clary Sage

Clary Sage balances the emotions, which is so important when you want to feel sensual and desirable! It can also support hormones to improve our overall wellbeing. Clary Sage is one of my favourite essential oils for women and it’s easy to blend into any sensual blend to improve its ability to help you, as a woman.

                8. Patchouli

We all know that Patchouli is deep, dark, and dare I say—dirty!

                Patchouli

It has a long history of creating mysterious environments that make us take notice and live for the moment, rather than worrying about the past or the future.

Interestingly, Patchouli may even stimulate the pituitary gland, releasing dopamine and serotonin, which can boost libido and take away the stress and anxiety of the day.

Finally, Patchouli blends well with other sensual essential oils, adding depth and longevity.

                9. Bergamot

This is citrus for grown ups, so consider it if you like citrusy scents and you’re ready to take it to another level!

                Bergamot

Bergamot oil enhances the flow of energy—it is both uplifting and calming. It has a sophisticated yet refreshing aroma that brings a touch of lightness, airy fragrance, and joy to sensual essential oil blends consisting of “heavy going” and dense-feeling oils like Patchouli, Jasmine, and Ylang Ylang.

Like other oils on my list, Bergamot helps to create a relaxing and calming environment conducive to romance. Its light-hearted and balanced profile is attractive to both the sexes.

Sourcing Bergamot Essential Oil for Sensual Blends

Look for Bergamot FCF (furanocoumarin-free) essential oil. Regular Bergamot oil contains phototoxic compounds that can cause severe skin reactions to UV light. In contrast, FCF Bergamot is safer for skin applications such as massage oils that are used on parts of the face or body that may be exposed to sunlight.

                10. Tuberose

Classic femininity, powerful yet soft. Tuberose is a rich, heady floral reminiscent of gardenia, jasmine, and creamy coconut.

                Tuberose

It is aphrodisiac, indolic, and narcotic. The downside to Tuberose, and the reason it appears at the end of this list, is that it is expensive, retailing at around £50/$70 per 1ml. However, if you can afford it, go for it!

Tuberose blends well with Rose, Sandalwood, Bergamot, Orange, and Patchouli in sensual essential oil blends.

And here are some more that truly light up my sensual self. While not as overtly sensual, they truly bring something to the table in essential oil blends for women.

Oils That Complement Sensual Essential Oil Blends

If you want a greater palette of sensual essential oils to try in your blends, then consider these essential oils:

                • Cardamom: Adds spice and warmth to sweet scents like vanilla and cocoa.
                • Cedar Wood: Fresh, adds masculine depth—great if you enjoy woodsy aromas.
                • Cocoa Absolute (Theobroma Cacao): Like vanilla, cocoa exudes warmth and comfort. It’s expensive, but it’s worth it!
                • Frankincense: Spiritual, grounding, transformative. Helps improve blood circulation.
                • Grapefruit: Adds a touch of citrus sweetness to any blend.
                • Ho Wood: Sweet, soft, and woody.
                • Lavender: I couldn’t leave lavender essential oil off this list! It has so many healthy connotations of love and adds a lovely floral heart to any blend.
                • Orange Sweet: Bringing cheer, busting tension.
                • Palmarosa: Brings about peaceful balance for when you’re feeling low.
                • Rose Geranium: Bright, cheerful, beautifying, and innocent.
                • Vetiver: This is a personal favourite. It’s such an irresistibly sexy and smoky scent. It’s a classic ingredient in men’s fragrances, but I think it works so well for women as a grounding and balancing plant.

Can you think of any others to add to this list?
