“Finding A Little More Work-Life Balance As A Business-Owning Parent” is a collaborative post.
Being a parent at work is not an easy thing to balance, and that can get doubly hard when you’re not just working for someone, but running a business that you’re wholly responsible for. Work-life balance isn’t just important to help you be better able to balance your responsibilities; it can prevent you from burning out, affecting both your business success and your family life. As such, here are a few tips to help you get along.
Work Where And When It Suits You
You might have to get to work every day to make sure that the business keeps ticking, but as the boss, you might be able to enjoy a little more flexibility on where and when, exactly, that work happens. You might find that your most productive hours are at night, immediately after the kids go to bed, or when preschool and schools open during the day. Similarly, having a home office that allows you to get to work immediately, no matter how you’re dressed, can ensure that you stay productive every day, rather than having to worry about getting dressed and commuting to the office.
Save Time On Daily Tasks With Smart Tools
If you’re not as productive as you would like to be during your working day, then the right approach isn’t always to work harder; it’s often to work smarter. Automating where you can, such as by using scheduling apps, accounting software, and a Bluetooth credit card reader for mobile sales to make receiving payments easier, can reduce how much admin work you have to do every day. Mobile-enabled technology also means that your business doesn’t have to be tied down to only one location, making it easier to reach a wider range of clients.
Build A Support System You Can Rely On
Those who can best understand the struggles and challenges of a business owner are other business owners. You should take the opportunity to reach out to and network with other entrepreneurs or, better yet, potential mentors. Whether it’s an online forum, networking event, support group, or just a couple of people you can meet up with for a coffee now and then, it can greatly help to not only spend time with others who understand your struggles, but also get tips from those who have been in your shoes before.
Set Clear Boundaries And Prioritize What Truly Matters
Not everything in life deserves equal attention at all times. When you’re at work, you should try to be in work mode as much as possible. Establish defined working hours (best set to when you’re least likely to be interrupted by your kids) and make sure that client expectations are clear, especially if you don’t want to be reached outside of those working hours. This might mean turning off notifications or creating a dedicated workspace you can step away from. Boundaries can be the thing that saves your sanity.
Managing business with kids is not easy, by any means, but the tips above should hopefully give you some ideas on how to get a little more balance in things.
