Dealing with the feeling of anxiety can be challenging, especially if it’s something that you experience on a regular basis. One minute everything feels perfectly normal and the next your mind is racing, your stomach is in knots and you’re wondering how long it’s going to last this time. That’s one of the most frustrating things about anxiety. It can appear out of nowhere and leave you feeling like you’ve lost control of the situation. While there are lots of different ways to manage anxiety, it’s always a good idea to speak to your GP if it’s having a significant impact on your life. In the meantime, having a few simple techniques up your sleeve can make those difficult moments feel a little easier to handle.
Pay Attention To What You’re Putting Into Your Body
What you eat can have a much bigger effect on your mood than many people realise. When life gets busy, it’s easy to reach for convenience foods and quick snacks, but living on fast food and sugary treats isn’t doing your body any favours. In fact, it can leave you feeling sluggish, irritable and sometimes even more anxious than before. Nobody is saying you need to eat perfectly all the time because let’s be honest, that’s just not realistic. However, adding more fruit, vegetables and whole foods into your diet can help give your body and brain the nutrients they need.
Experiment With The Grounding Technique
Grounding is one of the most popular techniques for reducing anxiety because it’s simple and can be done almost anywhere. If you’ve ever experienced anxiety, you’ll know it can make you feel disconnected from your surroundings. Some people feel dizzy, others feel shaky, and some struggle to focus on what’s happening around them. Grounding helps bring your attention back to the present moment. Take a look around and focus on what you can see, hear, touch or smell. One of my favourite grounding tricks is placing both feet firmly on the floor if I’m sitting down. It sounds incredibly simple, but it helps remind you that you’re safe and in control.
Consider CBD
It’s not always easy to talk about cannabidiol, better known as CBD, but the truth is that CBD extract doesn’t cause a high and many people use it as part of their wellness routine. These days you can buy CBD gummies, oils, vape products and plenty of other options depending on what suits you best. Everyone is different, which means what works for one person may not work for another, but some people find that CBD helps them feel calmer and more balanced throughout the day. Others find it helps them switch off at night and enjoy a better night’s sleep.
Consider Hypnosis
Hypnosis is another option that some people find helpful, particularly if anxiety tends to hit hardest at night. It’s amazing how quiet everything becomes when you’re trying to fall asleep, and suddenly every worry seems ten times bigger than it did during the day. Listening to a hypnosis recording can help redirect your focus away from anxious thoughts and onto something much more relaxing. There are plenty of free apps and recordings available, so it’s easy enough to give it a try.
